    Current Disaster Reponse

    [Friday, June 12]
The Red Cross provided family services to 2 families that were affected by a house fire in Fowler, Indiana (Benton Co).

The fire occurred on June 10th, but we were not called to respond to the fire. The family members contacted us for assistance.

We provided them with food, clothing and temporary shelter. We are currently working with them with referrals for permanent housing and their long term needs.

    Total family members: 8

    Annual Meeting Awards

The Tippecanoe County Chapter hosted its Annual Meeting on June 24, 2009. The Red Cross awarded volunteers with the chapter’s top annual volunteer awards and a new health and safety award.

New this year, the Health & Safety Department awarded an Authorized Provider Award to Purdue University Department of Recreational Sports. Authorized Providers (APs) are instructors in Red Cross CPR/AED/First Aid training that train people in their workplace. The Dept. of Recreational Sports has 9 APs on staff and trained over 600 people last year.

    Home Pool Tips

Home pools – help keep them safe and properly maintained

A swimming pool can mean hours of fun for the whole family. Pools and hot tubs can help improve a person’s health and quality of life. But it is important that owners take steps to reduce the risks that go along with pool ownership, such as injury, illness or drowning.

The American Red Cross and the National Swimming Pool Foundation® offer this online training course and resource guide to help you safely enjoy your pool or hot tub. Home Pool Essentials™: Maintenance and Safety will teach you:

    Thank you Sheriff's Deparment!

The Red Cross extends a hearty thank you to Sheriff Tracy Brown and his dedicated staff who hosted another successful Sheriff's Annual Fish Fry on June 5.

Thank you to Tim Clark for arranging this year's first ever Car Show to wild success!

Thanks to all of the volunteers who helped make the Fish Fry, Car Show, Family Fun Center and Bake Sale as successful as it was and Thank You to everyone in the community who came out to support the Red Cross at the Sheriff's Fish Fry.

    Thank You!

Thank you to everyone who participated in the first annual Run for the RED 5K/10K Walk/Run on May 30th.

It was a huge success with over 300 runners at the Veteran's Home and nearly 400 runners in the sister race in Baghdad, Iraq on May 31st!

H1N1 [Swine] Flu now at Pandemic Level

The World Health Organization (WHO) raised the flu alert to the highest level, declaring swine influenza (H1N1) a global pandemic. According to WHO, increasing the alert to Phase 6 signifies that swine flu has spread to more countries but does not necessarily mean the virus is causing more severe illness.

This new pandemic is the first global flu epidemic in 41 years. As of June 10, WHO states that 74 countries have officially reported 27,737 cases of swine flu (H1N1), including 141 deaths.

Both the WHO and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) held press briefings today. The tone was calm and matter-of-fact about this situation. The American Red Cross is well prepared for this current H1N1 level of severity and we have plans in place to protect the people we serve.
